Reviews: the widest gap of the four trades
For each search we took two medians: the review count of the top 3 listings, and of ranks 4 to 20. Across 2,453 searches, the middle values were 271 and 69.
The other trades are much closer together. Roofing came out at 77 vs 42, plumbing at 153 vs 59 and water damage at 57 vs 47. Google looks at many things besides reviews. These numbers describe the list, and they don't explain who ranks where.
Weekend hours
29.0% of HVAC companies that list hours on Google are closed both Saturday and Sunday. That's fewer than roofing (33.5%) or plumbing (35.6%), and more than water damage (14.0%).
A homeowner whose furnace quits on a Saturday sees those listed hours in Maps. We counted the hours only, not who answers.
No website on the profile
About one in five HVAC companies we counted, 21.6%, have no website listed on their Google profile. Some of them may have a site they never linked.
Four quick checks for an HVAC owner
- Search "hvac" and your town on Google Maps. How many reviews do the first 3 companies have?
- Check the Saturday and Sunday hours on your Google profile. That's what a homeowner with a dead furnace sees.
- If your Google profile lists no website, add yours.
- Ask every customer for a review the day the heat or air is working again.
How we counted
Source: 10,101 saved Google Maps searches, Oct 5 to 25, 2026, 4 trades.
Three counting rules:
- Each company is counted once.
- A listing with no reviews counts as 0.
- Searches with fewer than 10 results are skipped.
What these numbers don't show:
- Listed hours on Google, not whether a company answers the phone. Companies with no hours listed are left out.
- Each company counted once per trade. A trade search can include companies from other trades.
- Reviews are one of many things Google weighs, and these counts don't show that more reviews move a company up. A listing with no reviews counts as 0. Searches with fewer than 10 results are skipped.
- "No website" means no website is listed on the Google profile. The company may still have a site.
- When we searched the same place a second time, we left that second search out. Counting it changes each percent by 0.4 points or less.
Our local search data pages count something else: listings per city, each with its own search date. This page counts companies across the 10,101 saved searches from Oct 5 to 25.
