How many 5-star reviews do I need to increase my rating on Google?

It depends on your current count and score. Your Google rating is an average, so you can work it out: with 20 reviews averaging 4.2, each new 5-star review moves the average up a little less than the last one.

Work it out

  1. Multiply your current average by your review count to get total stars (4.2 x 20 = 84).
  2. Pick the rating you want (4.5).
  3. Try adding five-star reviews until the math works: (84 + 5n) / (20 + n) = 4.5 gives n = 12 new five-star reviews.
  4. Keep asking after that. Customers read recent reviews, and a steady flow keeps your average honest.

FAQ

Can I delete bad reviews?

No. You can reply, and you can flag a review that breaks Google's policy.

Should I ask only happy customers?

Ask everyone after a finished job. Do not filter, and do not offer anything in return.

Does the count matter or the score?

Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking. Both count.
