How the ads work, per OpenAI
- Ads appear below the end of a response and are labeled as sponsored.
- They may appear for users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts will not have ads.
- Ad testing started in the United States on February 9, 2026.
What to do
- Ask any seller who promises a "ChatGPT recommendation" to show a result you can run yourself.
- Put your effort into what you can control: a complete Google profile, reviews, and clear service pages.
- Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers would ask once a month, and write down what it says.
FAQ
Does an ad make ChatGPT recommend me?
No. OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers, and seeing an ad does not mean OpenAI endorses or recommends the advertiser.
Can an agency get me into the answer?
An agency can clean up your site, listings and reviews. It cannot buy a place in the answer.
Is it worth buying an ad?
That is a budget decision for you. Check OpenAI's "Ads in ChatGPT" help page for current availability first.
